Nostalgic memories of Weymouth's local history

Share your own memories of Weymouth and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My first girlfriend went on holiday here in 1955 so I waited impatiently for a letter from her. Lovely memory
Army child and went to eight different schools 1936-1946. There was an all boys school called St Johns at Weymouth. On one of my return trips to my native county from Canada, I was perturbed to see it had been pulled down . I understand it was done just a year inside it's designation as a historical building. In place I saw a building called St Johns bed and breakfast. My year there was 1938 and graphic ...see more

I first visited Weymouth as a small child during the second world war to see my rather strict widowed maternal grandmother who lived at 10 Carlton Road South, within walking distance of the beach. I particularly recall the strong smell of gas in the kitchen and geraniums in the porchway. I have a photo of me dated 1945 playing on the beach with a metal bucket and spade and in the background can be seen two ...see more
I was born in 1952. My Mum and Dad were brought up in Weymouth and although they moved to Gloucestershire after the war, all four grandparents remained in Weymouth. So the whole family, which included my three sisters, would catch the train from Stroud or Stonehouse and spend the entire long school holiday in Weymouth, first with one set of Grandparents in Old Castle Road, then with the other, in ...see more
I was born in 1942 and since I was 8 have returned to Weymouth many times since. What priceless memories I have of this place and people that come to mind, school and village coach trips from Norton Fitzwarren in Somerset with our parents sat around on the beach as us children played, sadly the older folk all now gone. Later about 1951 trips there in dads 1936 Wolseley. One wonderful memory was at 14, camping ...see more
In the 50's Bertram Mills Circus used to come to town and I remember there was a great procession through the streets near the harbour, this included the elephants and the prancing horses! On Saturday mornings there were rolling-skating sessions in the Sydney Hall at the bottom of Boot Hill. The old fishermen, dressed in navy blue sweaters, spread out their nets on the pavements bordering the ...see more
I have great memories of Weymouth, we used to stay just outside Weymouth at Moonfleet Manor. My parents first stayed there just after the 2nd world war, it was a complimentary holiday after a double booking at blackpool. The owners had just purchased Moonfleet and turned it into a hotel as it was used as a hospital for the troops in the war. We went every year after I was born until my dad died in 1970. I had great ...see more
I love Weymouth and would like to retire here one day! We came on holiday in July, bringing our little girl, Isobel, on her first holiday, also two of my other children and other members of the family. I love this picture, we stayed just behind where this was taken and had to walk past this part of the harbour everyday, it will be an everlasting memory. I have been to Weymouth three times in the last year ...see more
As a family we would holiday in Weymourth every year from about 1958-1963. We used to stay in a bed and breakfast owned by a Mrs Walkadine. As I was so young my memories revolve around the wonderful beach, the donkeys and egg sandwiches full of sand. I would love to visit the house we stayed in but my parents are both dead and I was too young to remember such things. Does anyone know of a way to find the ...see more
