More about this scene

The main street of Alllington village (bottom left) leads into this panorama of Bridport town, looking south-east from Allington Hill, with the outer parish's St Swithun's Church being the prominent building (centre right). It was built in 1826, in a rare Greek-revival style, with a circular bell tower above the pedimented Doric portico. Beyond, stretching from right to left, is the line of West Street through to the Town Hall and Market Place, with the chimneys of net-makers Joseph Gundry and Company (centre left), Ewens and Turner in St Michael's Lane (centre), and the Bridport Brewery (centre right). The distant tower (centre) is St Mary's Parish Church. Beyond is North Hill, above Burton Bradstock, with the hills of Bothenhampton and Hyde forming the eastern horizon (left).

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

This is where we played as kids - all eight of us! Our grandad was born in one of the houses on the bottom left-hand side. He lived there all his life and my father plus my eldest brother, sister and my nephew was born in the same house. Five generations lived there for over 100 years. It was sold out of the family in 2002. My grandparent and parents where also married in the St Swithins Church. A lot has changed sadly, a lot more houses built.
