There Was More To Binfield Than This
A Memory of Binfield.
There were the Cardricks who lived at the top of Tilehurst Lane and Terrace Road and were a family of carpenters. Then there were the Carpenters who had the garage near the Standard Corner in Terrace Road and the Timms with the other garage and breakers yard in Terrace Road(now South) . The Dennis family of lawn-mower and lorry fame on the corner of Forest Road and Wicks Green, together with Sir Robert Wilmot and his daughter, Norah, who had the racing stables on Billingbear, with Bob Greenhill from Wicks Green as the head lad and later trainer following Sir Robert's dearth. Nearby at Allenbay Park the Wills Family, second cousins to Queen Elizabeth 2, where Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend spent
time as lovers contrary to the wishes of the then Royal Family. Therer werethe Binfield Brick snd Tile works in Amen Corner making hand made soft bricks, related to Ben Green living in Terrace Road, near the Victoia Arms, running a haulage company, and who also had a "pug-hole" or quarry for the soft clay for brick manufacture in his grounds.
Also remember MajorGeneral Sir Alfred Knox living in Binfield House, now a residential home with the Binfield Medical Surgery in its grounds. Also living in Forest Road, near the the blacksmith, wasTim Carew, an author, and in whose grounds he had built "The Wooden Hut Club", in the form of Swiss Chalet, as a night club, and frequented regularly by Diana Dors from Virgina Waters, together with friends.
Binfield was at those times a village of 1200 persons and with a background of OLD MONEY, as my addition will display.
