Nostalgic memories of Ludgershall's local history

Share your own memories of Ludgershall and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Does Ludgershall still have a "Ludgershall Lads" football team. As a teenager I played for them, that was in 1951 to 1953 or thereabouts. The manager's name was Sid though I've forgotten his surname and one year Ted Bates, Southampton's manager, visited us to give us tips. The first year we played we were a disaster losing 22 to nothing on the odd occasion but we must have improved because in my 3rd year we were ...see more

Some of you may remember me from reading this! Some of you may choose to forget! More than likely the latter! Sadly, My brother was the main trouble maker in the village and wherever he went, I had to go with him, he was my little brother and I just had to look after him, or so I was told! Back in the 80's things were a lot different! you could go out and leave your front door unlocked, you could ...see more
I hated that school; remember the 'Black Crow?' We were all stood there in our sick mustard colour, she would sweep down in the all black gown, together with the bloody hat on her head. Bye the way; my mum was the school cook, as a result was booted out. Oh well, s..t happens, take care, love Diane, ignore tag.
I lived in Ludgershall from 1931 through 1938. My father ran The Crown after he retired from the Navy. There is/was a ghost in the pub, he lived in the attic (the building had a double roof). My sister and I played in the horse stables, and occasionally in the pond, located around the pump out back - the pond was caused by heavy rain. I was a choirboy at the Church. One time we 'went on strike' for more pay, the pay ...see more
My Dad, Thomas Edmund Miller was born at 7 Bell Street, Ludgershall. Dad died at our home in Willingdon, East Sussex in 1956 aged 50). Until I had some family research done, I always thought he was a Londoner. On a vist to UK in 2001 from NZ I decided to visit his place of birth. I found the house in Bell Street and knocked on the door with a view to introducing myself and hopefully having a ...see more
I remember moving to Perham Crescent when I was about four or five, with my parents Betty and John Mcrae. I lived at number 29 Perham Crescent. It became a family crescent eventually: Ken and Enid Beard lived at 17, 22 was Alicia and Eric Saunders, 23 was Len and Laura Gellard, 28 was Eric and Peggy Gilbert and I remember loads of others that lived in the crescent. I moved from the crescent when ...see more
I went to the St James School next to this church, but left in 1965 when we emigrated to Australia. Surname was Wheeler-Smith. Brothers Michael and Peter. Father Arthur, mother Barbara. Anyone remember? Dad was a fireman and also worked at Roys as a french polisher.
I went to this school when it opened in 1965 and was very new. I remember doing gardening and cooking using new cookers. Our uniforms were brown and white or lemon. I was thinking about it recently when Davy Jones died as we were all Monkee fans. My father was in the army and we lived in the village for 6 years. I sang in the church choir and went to brownies and guides. I left towards the end on 1967.
We moved to Ludgershall, this street (No 5, third house down) in 1975. My father was with the MOD and worked in the REME workshop in Ordnance Road in Tidworth. By then the road although still a close, was much longer than it shows here with lots more houses. As a boy it was a great place to grow up, as you were right on the edge of the country side with so much to do. There was a triangle of unused land just a bit ...see more
