Share your own memories of Heswall and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My sister Lesley spent her 5th birthday at Heswall hospital. On 26th April 1957. She'd had encephalitis and then became epileptic. She had a birthday party on the ward, we have some photos of her sat in her cot/bed. She had two enormous black eyes and was heavily medicated. She still has the doll she recieved from our mum and dad on that day. I wish i knew about that time, but i was only 4 years old. I remember my mother asking me to go Manner's Lane to the big house by the shore to buy a pint of shrimps - not many left by the time I got back! The smell of the mound of shrimp shells on the beach waiting for the tide to take them away.
I was in Holbrook Gaskell ward twice about 1956 &1958 I had rheumatic fever. I thought I would never go home, it seemed such a long way from Liverpool and my mum could only visit once a week and I could only see my sister through the railings. I did get to know some nice people there. I remember a teacher who used to come in each day - I think her name was Miss Jaimerson, she used to bring dolls for ...see more
My father was a patient at Heswall in the late 40's. He was suffering with Perthe's disease (a disease of the hip) and he was there for about 18 months. His name was Alan Rudkin. He was a little blond haired boy at the time of his stay, I think he was about 6 to 8 years old. I'm in the process of writing a biography on my fathers life. Despite his illness he went on ...see more
I have just found a photograph with the names, Denise O'Gorman and Marie Lafferty H.O.T ward Heswell Oct 1970 on the back. I believe my late mum was a nurse in this hospital in the 70's! I am looking for friends of hers. Her name was Patricia Gray and Stephenson when she married. Would really appreciate it if anybody could share any memories of her as unfortunately I don't remember her as I was a baby when she died.
Does anyone remember the Old Chinese Man, Abe Traver, that used to wander around in the rain on stormy nights? He used to always bring his inappropriately named dog along to galas and functions, I think he (the dog) was called crapcake? Hooola back if you remember this creature.
