- Plymouth, the Hoe Pier 1889
Here is another archive photo of one of Britain’s lost landmarks in the Collection. The Hoe Pier at Plymouth was the last to be designed by the renowned pier designer Eugenius Birch, who died a few months before it opened in 1884. The poster at the entrance in this photograph from 1889 advertises a military band concert, for which the bandstand on the pier was popular. In 1891, the bandstand was replaced by a 1,000-seater pavilion. The pier was destroyed by enemy bombing in the Plymouth blitz during the Second World War, and the only link to this wonderful structure in Plymouth today is the name of Pier Street, which runs from Millbay down to the Hoe.
