- Hartlepool, Elephant Rock 1886
This photo from the Collection shows another lost landmark - this one is of an unusual natural rock formation at Hartlepool, known as Elephant Rock, which was a great local tourist attraction in the past. Sadly, the seas eroded the rock away, and just a few years after this photo was taken in 1886, the rock collapsed into the sea in May 1891. The only parts of Elephant Rock that remain today are the feet and the tip of its truck, which can sometimes be seen at low tide.
