Walton On Thames, High Street c.1955

More about this scene
Walton-on-Thames is another suburbanised town south-west of London along the River Thames. Built on slightly higher land away from the river, it turns its back on it, and this view looks north-west along the High Street to the Church Street crossroads. There is the usual suburban shopping street mix of timber-framed mock Tudor, neo-Georgian and Victorian architecture. The tall building centre left is the Art Deco-ish Burton's - its foundation stones were laid by members of the family in 1938 - and on the right is W H Smith in a heavily-corniced neo- Georgian style.
