More about this scene
The new station was built to replace the original station that had been completed in 1841. Construction took place between 1873 and 1877 on the site of a Roman cemetery. When it was completed, it was said to be the largest station in the world. Here, to the left, the roof top can be seen; inside it sweeps in a wonderful curve above the main platforms.
