Childhood Memories Of The 1950's
A Memory of Worthing.
My Grandparents moved to Worthing in June 1910. They first rented a property called Sunnyside (No 11) in Ladydell Road whilst waiting for the Church Walk houses to be completed. Then they moved into 23 Church Walk and named the house Armadale - you can still make out this name on the gate post although the name has since fallen into disuse and is almost obliterated by paint. They named the house Armadale as it was the name of the ship in which they returned to England from South Africa in 1910. My Mother was born here in 1916, my Grandparent's last child. My Grandmother finally sold the property in approx. 1957/8 when she moved to 132 Broomfield Avenue.
I have wonderful memories of Peter Pan's Playground, the Paddling Pool and the Boating Lake. Also negotiating the stones and seaweed to get a swim in the sea. My Mum told me that in her teens she knitted herself a swimming costume and had difficulty emerging from the sea as it had dropped down to her knees! I also remember visiting Sainsbury's (I think) when it had two long counters down either side of the premises and sawdust on the floor.
