Growing Up In Woolton

A Memory of Woolton.

My family from many generations back have liven in Woolton and Gateacre. I grew up in a house opposite the English Rose pub and went to Out Lane primary school. We spent our summer days playing in the orchard by Watergate Lane, in Quarry St swing park, Woolton Woods and Camp Hill and School Lane swing park. We learned to swim at the tiny Woolton Baths and I think I read every book in the childrens dept of the tiny library. Saturdays we went to the tiny cinema for the matinee, and galloped home down Out Lane slapping our sides to encourage our imaginary horses, or tying our coats around our necks superhero style. After swimming at the baths, we could buy chips from the village chippie and a carton of milk from the milk machine at Salisbury farm dairy on the top of Kings Drive.
Going back to Woolton now it saddens me to see how run-down everywhere seems. The village centre has been upgraded, but the Kings Drive, Hunts X Avenue and Mackets Lane area are all very shabby. Every scrap of vacant land has been built on so that the semi rural nature of Woolton has been obliterated. Many of the wide grass verges have been concreted over for residents parking, the orchard has gone under a housing estate, and so have the fields opposite the English Rose. Sadly it is no longer the lovely place it used to be.

Comments & Feedback

My family moved to Woolton in January 1960 I was 7 years old at the time and started school in the centre of the village at St. Mary's school which during my tenure there celebrated it's centenary in 1963. I have very fond memories of that school and when i see it now (no longer a school) i,m immediately transported back and see all the friends i had there, playing in the playground, inter school football matches with nearby St. Peters in Woolton woods and school holiday trips oh and the school choir ran by the Headmaster Mr. Baker. As mentioned by other contributors I too learnt to swim in the local baths and went to or was taken to the barber shop which is still there now close to the baths. On my most recent visit to Woolton village(December 2018) i was saddened to see the baths shut down and read the notice on the doors that it may be restored, it;s too much of a village landmark to be pulled down. In my early years in Woolton it was fascinating to be living next to a live quarry right in the village I remember gaping in awe at the huge sandstone quarry walls and all the village activity going on. I bought my first L.P. Rubber Soul by the Beatles in the little yellow painted music shop opposite to where the barbers is now, I used to love looking in there what a magical place. In these early years from 1960 to 1965 there was the daily spectacle of the cows from the dairy making their twice daily trip from the dairy up along the land between the roads and across Menlove Avenue to the large field on the corner, truly a lovely working village practice. Although time has moved on I found the main character of the village has been maintained even though some of the shops i visited as a boy are no longer there except of course in my minds eye and these I will treasure for ever.
