Woolpit, The Carved Roof Of St Mary's Church c.1955

More about this scene
This is a double hammer beam roof, an exclusively East Anglian structure of which Suffolk has two-thirds of the total. There are 106 angels on the hammers, wall plate and wall posts, all with outstretched wings hovering over the congregation at worship. At the end is the Canopy of Honour, which may have been part of the original design, but which was most probably added in the 1840s.
