Ashton Playing Fields

A Memory of Woodford Bridge.

I remember these playing fields being flooded by the Roding on a fairly regular basis. From the main road there was the clinic where mums used to go to get free orange juice and I think milk for their babies. Also, they could get baby's health checked, weight etc. Does anyone else remember this?

yes,I remember being taken to the clinic and getting the orange juice...bottle with a blue I seem to remember !! Must be about 1949 - 50
I remember the orange juice from the clinic - my younger sister was born in 1949 a few months after we moved to Woodford Bridge and I vaguely remember going with mum and the baby to the clinic - I loved the orange juice in the flat sided bottles. I think we got cod-liver oil and malt there too which was quite yummy.

The Towns Women's Guild met at Ashton Playing Fields pavilion too and my mum belonged to that. I remember she sang in a choir there and I still have the sheet music of some of the songs they performed in their concerts. They put on a Christmas play there one year that I remember going to when I was about 8 or 9.

I moved away from Woodford Bridge in 1964 and live in Berkshire now, so it was very odd when a few years ago my son (then in his early thirties) told me he was going to some sporting event (football tournament perhaps?) which was being held at a place called Ashton Playing Fields and he wondered if I had I heard of it? It certainly brought a lot of memories flooding back.
