More about this scene
Situated in Appleton, to the north of central Widnes, St Bede's is a reminder of the then recent change in the status of Britain's Roman Catholics. It was only in 1829 that the Catholic Emancipation Act was passed allowing Roman Catholics to celebrate Mass. St Bede's Church was built soon afterwards, and Mass was first celebrated here in 1847.
