More about this scene
There was once a pub in this area which was called the Ball which may be where the name Ball o' Ditton comes from. All along Liverpool Road, and to both sides of it, there was tremendous development from the mid 1800s in response to the need to accommodate people coming to work in the new chemical industries in both Widnes and Runcorn. These workers came from far and near - from Wales and Ireland and from Poland and Lithuania!
