Demolition took its toll on the left side of this picture. On the opposite side we may identify the corner building and the Friends Meeting House; between them is one of the oldest houses in Whitby, certainly Tudor, possibly much older. In Tudor times, its roof was thatched. In case of fire, there were very long rakes which could remove the burning roof.
