F W Rowse

A Memory of West Ealing.

F W Rowse was a department store on the Uxbridge Road. I remember on the ground floor you passed the furniture until you reached the toys at the back. On the right was material and patterns. I remember going with my mum and watching her buy material. There were big tables which had a sort of meter on where the material was unrolled and the assistant ran it through the meter to measure the length. There were also drawers of patterns. My mum bought one to make me a cowboy outfit one day. There was a grand circular staircase leading up to ladies fashion. Even as a teenager I remember buying things there.

Yes I remember that. I moved to 40 Melbourne Avenue as a young doctor. I took over from Dr Doyle-1962. We used to get are groceries down the road at The Hole in the wall. And Bentalls for coffee!
My father was the Display Manager of Rowse's, and later General Manager of this and John Sanders (at Ealing Broadway). He was so proud of the windows and store displays and won several awards. When I was at school, I worked in the drapery dept on Saturdays, so I well remember those yard-rulers attached to the tables. In those days, I could work out 3-and-a-half-yards at 1 guinea a yard in my head. The dumbing down of decimalisation ended that mental athleticism!!!
