The Great Eastern Railway Company developed the quayside, and freight trains rolled under the high platform of the tall granary warehouse to receive produce. Now only small coastal steamers are able to navigate the difficult channels to reach the quayside. The history and make-up of the town has dramatically changed over the years. From being a huge seaport, with a fishing industry which brought in the famous Wells whelks, it is now a popular spot for tourists. The sandy beach is about a mile from the quay, but if you are loaded down with picnic hampers and children, there is a small single-track steam train that will take you almost to the water's edge.

Outside Our House
This brings back vivid memories of growing up as the doctor's son. Our house not quite in this shot was on the left just here. The wing of the car could have been my father's an Austin Devon. As a five year old I would cycle like mad all round The Buttlands on my trike and when I had a two wheeler, across the diagonal paths and skid to a halt on the corners. The Good Old Days At Wells
I first lived in a little cottage in Jolly Sailors Yard, around 1944. When I was about 3 years old my parents, Fred and Connie Smith, my brother Derek and me, Norman (Bim) Smith moved to Standard House. We had a great lIfe living there when we were older, just walking round the corner and diving off the quay wall when the tide was up. Wells Lifeboat Wwii Years
The coxswain of the lifeboat is the tall, erect Dane, Theodore Neilsen (stood at the stern of the boat). My father, Alf Powditch, was the engineer and is sat on the tractor.Theodore (Ted for short) fished for whelks with my father. One of my father's whelk boats was named "Marion". Old Salt Sundays 1950's Wells Next The Sea
"As quick as you can, jump in dad's van - we are going to Wells-Next-The-Sea". With seaside sandwiches along, favourite egg n tomato ones plus the Primus for a nice cup of tea. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
