These are one of five sets of locks used to even out the water level along the canal. Latchford has parallel locks; the larger one in front of Richmond's' works (left) measures 600 by 65 feet, taking a large vessel and tugboat. The sluice gates behind the smaller lock (right) control the flow of water and maintain a constant level.
