More about this scene
Wallasey Docks were built on what was known as Wallasey Pool, a once wild and beautiful tidal creek. The first boiler-making and shipbuilding yard was built by William Laird, the Liverpool-based Scotsman, in the mid 1820s. In 1829 he launched his first iron ship, a 60-ton lighter for use in Ireland. Dock development in Wallasey Pool continued at a pace from then on, with Egerton and Morpeth Docks opening in 1847, Alfred Dock being finished in 1851 and Wallasey Dock opening in 1877.
