Fircroft Junior School, Miss Welty

A Memory of Tooting.

Miss Welty was the infant school headmistress, elderly and eccentric, she was a dedicated and lovely lady. My teacher was Mrs Charlton of whom I have extremely fond memories. I also attended Fircroft Junior School, does anyone remember dancing around the Maypole, country dancing and musical movements? At Christmas time we made decorations and staged a nativity play as well as having the school Christmas party. Boys and girls were segregated in the playground and I can still remember the smell of school dinners and warm milk in the summer.
We walked to Balham baths once a week to learn how to swim and I also remember a roofed outbuilding and outside toilets in the playground.

Fircroft Infants and Juniors. My sister and I attended school here in 1958- 1967 between us. I remember the roofed outbuilding I think we called it the shed! And the white line down the middle of the playground with the infants one side and the juniors on the other side which we were not allowed to cross( imagine that today!). I reminisced with work friends recently saying how our toilets in the corner of the playground froze over in the winter and you could not pull the chain!!! The junior school was on two floors with a lovely pair of staircases which went up either side of the hall. Mr Dalton was my junior teacher. I was at the juniors from 1962- 1968. School was always a challenge for me as I was overweight and tormented. But it was a lovely school. My sister and I went on to Garret Green.
Hello Dawn, I remember you well...I was in Mr Daltons class as well, then I moved up to Mr tickners class and was in a couple of his plays ! I played Joseph next to Sally Anne Cranfield, and also played Harry ( who kept forgetting his h's) in the magic bow tie ,next to Philip wickes... went to a reunion about15 years ago and met Tony Hibbert and Jane Martin, always had a thing for Jane...Mrs Eatherley was head teacher at that time ..can you remember the playground being separated between boys and girls by a white line at the back of the school ? Also there was a 'sin bin in the boys playground that if you misbehaved the playground monitor would make you stand in it ,then when their back was turned we would all kick the balls at the people in the bin ...
