More about this scene
It is Market Day in the busy little town of Thirsk, which stands at the foot of the Hambleton Hills, halfway between York and Darlington. Thirsk has always been an important stopping place on the old Great North Road, and the Golden Fleece Inn, on the extreme right of the picture, was a coaching inn where horses were changed. Today, Thirsk is the heart of James Herriot Country, and the actual vet in the stories, Alf Wight, was married in St Mary's Church here in 1941.
