More about this scene
One much-loved inhabitant was the actress Peg Woffington, who died here at the age of 39. Peg Woffington created the role of Polly Peachum in Gay's 'The Beggars' Opera', and became the toast of London society in the early 18th century. Tradition says that she gave away much of her fortune to the poor people of Teddington - she may have endowed the local almshouses.
