More about this scene
In 1951 the Borough of Swindon purchased Penhill Farm, which lay in the parish of Stratton St Margaret, just outside the borough boundary north of the town, for housing. The following year the boundary was extended to bring all the land acquired into the borough. This photograph looks north, and shows what became the focal point for the estate, with the branch library to the right on the corner of Corsham Road, and the parade of shops, including Bollom, dry cleaners. To the left we can just glimpse the Deers Leap, a public house which was opened here in 1958 by Mitchells & Butler of Birmingham.
