More about this scene
Swanage pier is really a landing stage of immense proportions. It was originally some 1400 ft in length, designed to facilitate the export of Purbeck stone. It was adapted to serve the steamer trade, which took tourists to the resorts and beauty spots along the coast. Early morning bathing was allowed from the pier on payment of a small fee and on the assumption that the bather was 'modestly dressed'.
