More about this scene
Beyond the Singer Sewing Machine shop is Collins' stationery business (right). In the 1920s and 30s Walter Collins printed a well-known series of sepia postcards of the town. In the far distance the façade of the Ritz Cinema, which burnt down on 23 June 1961, can be seen. It was estimated at the time that 120,000 gallons of water were used in attempting to extinguish the blaze. Above the cinema, designed in distinctive 1930s style, was a popular restaurant.
