The Hall

A Memory of Stowlangtoft.

Don`t have any memories of the Hall but am searching for anyone who lived there when it was a Childrens Nursery which was run by London County Council. Have had some info on the place & know a Miss Yorath was Matron during my stay there. Is there anyone out there who can help my research?

Hi my name is David Fitzpatrick. I was recently looking at my old records of my time in care and saw that I was in Stowlangtoft Hall with my sister Joan from 6 December 1955 to 18 January 1956. I also have memory of being there the following Easter. I intend to visit the place soon as the strong memory I have for that Easter I would like to confirm,as they are very pleasant memories and for some reason have stuck with me always. If I can be of any help I would be only to happy to oblige. David.
I was placed there about 1947/8 until my future adopted parents chose me about 1950/51. I have had letters from people who worked there during my time there. Matron was Miss Yorath, teachers were Miss Varley/Jones/Rye.Also Margaret/Sally/Kathy/Irene.
My name at the time was Audrey Lloyd I came via London County Council through Bethnal Green. Anyone remember me?
You may have know Pauline Beckett. She worked there during 1947/48. She sent me a photo of ME outside of the Hall. So proud of this picture!
Some of the children's names were Paul/Michel/Terry/Robin.
/Ruth/Maureen/Rita./Keith.
Also have a letter from Dorothy Day when she worked there as a Nurery nurse 1960/61.
The building is no longer a home, think it may be private housing but was a Nursing home. I live just a few miles from there but still have not visited the place, maybe I should?
Check out some other people who are on this site, should we have a meeting at the Hall?
Dear Ms Pamplin,

Thank you for your email.. My family have owned the Hall since 1930s. I have been collecting information about the history of this lovely building. London County Council rented the Hall as a children’s home from the late 1930s – 1967, Several of the staff and children have retuned to have a look around and share their stories. I love showing people around, so please call me on 01359230210 if you would like to have a tour. I have no pictures of the life at the Hall as a Children’s Home, but would really appreciate listening to you.

The above email is open to anyone who wishes to visit the Hall.
I hope to go with a friend very soon.
My name is Angela Haye-I was at the Hall with my twin brother (Michael). I remember celebrating our 5th birthday in Jan 1961. Our father was from Jamaica and visited a couple of times. I would love to go and visit but appreciate it may now be difficult. I remember giving toast to the horses, going to the local school and the swing. I’m not if your no is still available to ring and I don’t want to call without checking first. Many thanks
