I have vivid memories of the slippery rock in Vernon Park. Other memories from the park were, the bench in the shelter at the lower entrance, I used to run around on top of the bench. The rhodedendron bushes, they were great for dens. I loved the museum, I think they had a butterfly collection. My dad taught me to ride my two wheeler and to roller skate in Vernon Park. I went to All Saints School in 1958,cant remember the teachers name, but can remember writing on our blackboards whilst see collected the dinner money and penny bank money.I can remember Miss Simpson and Mr Ireland, no others. Thanks to Ann Bennett for bringing back memories of Vernon Park - the park and museum were always magic places for me too. I remember the slippery stone when it was still fairly rough! We lived at Bredbury Bar until I was eleven (1956) and I have fond memories of the Daisy Field before St. Barnabas was built, Dark Lane before tarmac, the Cemetry Pond, Barlow's Farm, the Black & White Farm ...see more
I remember going to Vernon Park so well. We would walk down from Bredbury Bar. There was a large slippery stone at the top of the steps and Mum would lift me to the top and I would slide down. I thought that stone was magic. There was a large bird cage in the park but I think its gone now. The museum was a favorite and when I was about 13 I used to find fossils in Castleton near the Blue John Mines and take them to ...see more
