Happy Memories
A Memory of Stanwell.
My goodness, some of the articles brought back so many good memories.
I lived at Riverside Place and went to Lord Knyvitts School around 1957. The milk that iced up in the morning at school and the newspaper I was required to tear up for toilet paper, who knows how the toilets didn’t block up especially in winter when the water in the bowl iced up. I married at St Mary’s church too. I left Stanwell for pastures new around 1971. I worked in the hairdressers as a Saturday girl for a few years, think it was called Arlenes. I remember the funfair arriving, with great anticipation, around May time on the village Green. Just read about the blacksmith which I had forgotten about! Rayners shop. The phone box near Rayners that I used to sneak out to and phone my boyfriend, sneaky. Think there were 3 pubs, The Wheatsheaf but the names escape me for the others, one on the corner near the blacksmiths - a little lady ran it for some while.
My father worked at the airport and my mother stayed at home, we always had ‘aunties’ who fussed over me. How many lovely memories relived reading the articles.
My name was Susan Ireland if anyone remembers me or my parents, Gladys and Don.
