Staining Around 1956

A Memory of Staining.

Does anyone remember Miss Edge headmistress of Staining school , Mrs. Bray took the middle classes and Mrs. Dickson was in the infant room. I don't know how old Miss Edge was but to me she seemed VERY old. I had the cane from her twice for small misdemeanours. My friends in school were Robert and Jennifer Jordan, Muriel Newton, Vicky Dickinson, Dorothy Evans Steven Cowell and Neville Smith. My Grandad lived opposite the windmill and kept pigs and cows. Miss Whalley lived in the village and what is now Bibby Drive was called Whalley Estate when it was first built, we lived at number 1.I moved away when I was ten years old but I visited many time afterwards. A lady call Rosie Smith rode a horse around the village and how I admired her.My maternal Grandparents lived at Staining Hall.

What was your name then? I am Barbara Dagger. You may have known my late brother Roy.
Hi, yes I think Roy was younger than me. I was Irene Fiddler and I have a brother Robert who is a year younger. I was sorry to see that you said your late brother.
In 1956 I was 4 yrs old my name is Ian Croft my dad was Albert Croft we lived on the camp till he built a bungalow opposite the School we both went to the School I remember Mr. Adams headmaster Mrs. Hollows who replaced him Mrs. Dickson and Miss Ireland I remember we had two time capules boxes really put in the altar wall outside I remember them years ago and commented about them and e-mailed the School but got no reply I remember going on school camp to Peebles in Scotland there was a very bad thunder and lightening that night I woke early that morning and saw the big tent down turned to the right and saw a tree fell on the girls tent and killed a girl forgot he name now the girls tent was next to the boys tent on a lghter note my dad was told off by Mr. Adams for riding his bike on the school wall backwards so he ran and climbed up the bell tower and would not come down so the Mr. Adams rang the bell the Policeman came to ask what was going on then my dad came down because of the bells told off by them both my dad said he could not hear anything of a while and then he got the cane another memory was one sunday morning at Church Mr.Snape if think from the oldest farm in the village near the old brewery and Newton Hall Holiday Camp walked to Church and tied his big saddleback pig on the drainpipe next to the door when the Vicar was preaching every 20 seconds the pig would snort he was told to take the pig home another time he had an old well no wall round it and on a moonless night he was drinking and fell down it someone came round to check on him heard him and with some help from the camp got him out asked him how long were you down the well he said one and half days there about dad and me used to make the boiler run and change from school to church and back again for school I used to love doing that
Hello Ian & Irene ,My name is Jennifer Siswick ‘tho you would remember me as Jennifer Hesketh ( I lived at Staining Road End )
I certainly remember your Grandad Ian ,he was a character and I giggled at your stories as I can imagine Albert getting up to those ‘tricks ‘
I too was sorry to hear of Roy Dagger’s passing ,my sympathy to the Dagger family .I didn’t go to the day school in Staining but I attended Staining Sunday School from the age of 3 and I enjoyed being in the Gala .In those days it was a real highlight of the year .There was a stumbling block ,however ,as I hated the chemical toilet in the Institute where we practiced our Gala dances ! Also the ‘Fur and Feather ‘ Whist drives where the prizes were rabbits etc which were hung around the institute walls . In 1957 I was Rose Queen and I seem to remember that Roy Dagger was one of my canopy bearers . It really all seems like Ancient History now .Incidentally I’ve lived in Yorkshire for the past 50 years but I tell them I came to improve the bloodline !!!!
