Southall 1967 To 1971 North Road Primary School

A Memory of Southall.

I arrived in Southall aged 7 (September 1967) from Kenya, and moved into a rented property on Lady Margaret Road, just opposite a chip shop that used to be there. I remember a portion cost around 6 old pennies (2.5pence), and were wrapped in old newspapers. Lady Margaret Road, seemed really long to me then, and I remember how pretty it looked in Spring and Summer, when all the flowers bloomed in the rectangular plots dotted about the road.

I joined North Road Primary School, and started off in the 1st year (juniors - as it was known as at the time). I remember when I first attended the school, its head was a Mrs Shaw, who seemed to have come straight out of a Dickens Novel. She was a very grand looking lady, from another age altogether.
She retired soon after, and the post then went to a Mrs Danelian, who was also my class teacher for some time. I recall Mr Rogers, and his trusty slipper 'Fred', and the delightful tales he used to narrate. A most jovial man, whose bark was often worse than his bite... Then we also had a superb teacher by the name of Mr Wasley (spelling may be incorrect) who seemed to delight all the children with his glorious magic tricks, and his superb speed writing skills on the blackboard. For PE, we used to go swimming in that tiny pool, which used to be in the middle of the playground, in a tiny hut. We were taught by a Mr Greenaway, and I recall his techniques for getting us to breathe correctly bellowing out 'Breathe In, turn your heads, Breathe out"... During cold snaps, the pool would often be covered in large swathes of ice, and had plastic sheeting to separate the ice from the kids swimming in the water!! I still cannot swim properly to this day.. (not his fault though!).

I remember the wonderful team of 'dinner ladies', who really looked after the children at lunch times so well. The in-house cooking was really delicious, and seemed almost luxurious by today's standards. I remember a Mrs Thomson and a Mrs Cooke amongst others. They were so good, that they used to cut up the meat into tinier portions just so that we would eat the meals provided, properly, and at times, to enable us to chew it properly. I admit, that I did have difficulty with the roast lamb we used to get... I remember the lemon tart and custards, coconut sponge and custard, and my favorite sweet - chocolate sponge and... you've guessed it.. chocolate custard...!!!! Yummy. Those were the days..

For French lessons, we had a lovely teacher called Mrs Fish. She was terrific, and I still remember the language from her teachings, all those years ago. My very first class teacher, was a young Miss Hunter, she was simply amazing and so very kind.

I still remember the names of some of my classmates then (Surinderpal Sidhu, Joanne Cooke, Phillip Knight, Sucha Gosal, Sharan Hutt, John King, Paul KcKenzie, Adrian Whyte, Hajinderpal Dhami, and many others...

North Road Primary, was really such a great school, and it had wonderful teachers who really cared for the pupils in such a good way. Alas, all that ended, when I left the school, and went onto to my then 'brand new comprehensive' Twyford High School, in 1971...but that's another story.... ;)

Oh, your name wouldn't be Dennis by any chance would it??
If not, can you tell me who you are because i went to that school at the same time & recall a friend of mine that came from kenya or somewhere near there! I have a feeling he lived very close to the school.
Hello Roy, sorry, but I am not 'Dennis' .. My name is Kishor.... though your name does sound very familiar.... maybe you were in another class in the same year group..?
Oh sorry!
I was in miss Gregson's class which was just inside the side entrance door (by the bend in meadow road.
I wonder if you can point me in the right direction, i have been trying for ages to find historic photo's (classes) etc but with no luck.
There are some site's i have tried but they all draw a blank.
Don't know if you recall these following names?
Terry norris
Philip Gates
George jude
Rupert gabriel
Philip elstone.
I do have all the same memories as yourself with the teachers etc. I was born in 1959 if that is close to your age?
It is quite frustrating when you can't find things on the internet.
My mum still lived in southall until 2014 in the very same house i was born in. (West Avenue).
Thanks for getting back to me by the way.
Dear Roy, there was a family of Norris's in school, and also one in my class, who used to be really fast at running, and I believe used to live near beginning of Lady Margaret Road.. just before Shackleton Road... I'm afraid the other names do not conjure up anything to me... I was born in 1960 - so you may have been a year ahead, or in the other same year group as myself.
I tired searching in 'Friendsreuinted' website some years ago, and it had some people from our year groups there, but that site closed some time ago, since the arrival of 'facebook'... I am sure you too had wonderful memories of this great school, and the (to me) 'glorious 70's' that came about....
It's been nice to hear from someone from our year group, and recall that special time. Good luck in all you do, and hope that life has treated you brilliantly ever since... Cheers Roy.
Hi kishor.
Yes, the Norris family did live in ladymargret road but it was nearer the town hall end , there were around 12 family members.
I did look through friends reunited which was a good site in my opinion.
For some reason i have a great urge to remember all memories from the 60's & 70's but find it very hard to track down any school pics etc.
The 70's was a great time of life for me & probably for most people of our age group.
I wish i could re live that decade just once more!!
Thank you for responding to my messages & hope life has been kind to yourself as well.
Kind regards Roy.
Hi Guys
It's Terry Norris. My youngest brother Pete emailed me with this link. Wow Roy how are you doing mate? Many many yrs gone by and where they have gone I just do not know.
Hi Kishor
Like Roy I do not recall your name but as you said maybe because you were a yr younger? You may have classed with my brother Phil Norris who would have been in the same yr as you. I mirror all your memories here as if you read my mind.
The teachers, some of the kids lol. The swimming pool in the middle of the play ground. Do you remember a Mr Sherlock? Tall Irish teacher who I remember having something wrong with his little finger ? Roy would remember Steve Jackman grassing us up to him for making paper airplanes out of A4 school paper. We were sent up to Mr Rogers to meet Fred lol.
And those school meals were yummy, remember waiting your tables turn to be called up for seconds if there was dinner left over, and hoping your table was called up next before seconds had ran out..lol. Remember Mrs Cooke, I think she was rather a tiny lady ?
George Jude/Philip Elstone/Colin Spring/Martin Reduta?? I think that was how you spelt his surname? Nigel Harvey, a tall kid. Any you guys remember Andrew Spice/Ronnie Salter/Elizabeth Salter/Beverly Herd? Liz Salter lived near the school near the Green and few doors from that big building called Grove house. It was derelict for many years and us kids were spooked by its eeriness thinking it was haunted..lol..And what about the tuck shop near school lane, anyone remember it? Another girl I remember whom I had the hots for was Lesley Cook. I'm sure that was her name? My first crush on a girl.
Roy, remember the marbles (migs) we used to play in the play ground and those packs of cards you could buy with the stick of gum. We used to try win your set by flicking cards onto the ground and your opponent would try landing his card on top of yours to win it. That Chopper bike you got, mk1 in yellow, later mk2's had the T-bar shifter. god I was soooo envious and you never let me have a ride. And remember being called up in morning assembly by the head mistress before Mrs Dandelion took over, we used to call her dandelion I think..lol. Anyway we were humiliated and made an example of in front of the whole school for ducking some kids head down the toilet. You,me and George sent up to head mistress for the ruler across the hand. lol...I'm sure I could go on all day but give me some more memories guys to relate and talk about if you could. And what you are up to at the moment in your lives. I am friends with Steve Jackman/Bev Heard and Lorraine Williams on facebook .
Nice to find you guys.
Regards
Terry
Hello Terry, you are absolutely correct, and Phil was in my class..!!! It's amazing that it will be my 50th year since we moved to the UK, and 50 years since I joined North Road Primary!!! It really is good to see and cherish the memories of others from the same time frame. My older sis, named Manjula was a year or two above me, so you may just recall her perhaps.... your other classmates do not ring a bell as, correctly, they were the elders... so did not really know them. In these days of tensions, it's just wonderful to recall the barrier-less lives we seemed to have back then, we all just got along with each other, and amity seemed to prevail.... They were good times, and happy ones at that, with North Road being just sublime....

After the NRP, I opted for Twyford High School, in Acton, which
just blew me away initially. It had 1300 pupils at the time, compared to our tiny numbers in Juniors. Things were a lot different, and the innocence of the time seemed to disappear thereafter...

I am now in early retirement (after onset of redundancy), and have a son, who has just graduated, and who just started work this month!!! I worked in IT for most of my life with various companies, but have lived in the Ealing areas since the beginning. Hope you and family are doing well Terry, and do pass my regard to Phil when you see him. I bet he still runs as fast as ever!!!! Cheers,,,,
Hi Kishor
Indeed where have those innocent yrs gone? Remember wishing the days away and clock watching at school. Wanting to grow up too fast and go to work. Now I just want life to slow down a bit. Phil lives not far from me now in Bucks High Wycombe and no , he does not run fast any more if run at all..lol. Cant believe we are well into our 50's now. I used to live in Ealing broadway for 11 yrs. my 1st home out of the family nest. worked as a television engineer from school. My first job was working at Squire Of Ealing next to the town hall. I worked in piano restorations but eventually moved into the TV service dept. then moved onto working in same field with MOD where I met Gill, we were together for 14yrs and brought a flat down the road from where I was in Ealing. we split 14yrs later and I met a girl 20 yrs my junior lol. We have a daughter who is 14 in June. The wife left me in 2007 lol. so I have not had much luck with the ladies sigh. Now been single for 10 yrs and kinda got used to it. work in Reading Thames Valley Park for the Oracle Corp. I am their campus audio visual technician. All the family are doing well but my dad passed on in 83. Will say hi to Phil
Cheers
