Hi Shirley, I don't know you but I sure remember your mum if she was the Rag & Bone lady with the horse and cart who used to come around from time to time. We lived in Cherwell Grove through the sixties. My mum used to send me out with rags for some china. Hope all is well with you.
Hello Shirley, I also remember your dear Mum we lived at Araglen Avenue, and I can remember vividly going out with rags, I went to Culverhouse when Mrs. Impey was headmistress, she was terrifying! also remember Mrs. Powell Jones, another dragon ;-) I left in '67, I was Sheilas Boshell back then.
Hello Shirley. If your mum was the raglady then I used to play with your brothers in the yard. I went to Benyon,as did most of us. We lived at 7 Rosemary Close, We are the Hall family, Anne,Ted, us kids,Steven (me) jackie, andrew, david and the lsat caroline, who actually born in the pre-fab.We lived there from 1960 til 1967 when we moved to Dagenham. Dad worked at Marley Tiles nearby. When I found this site I was overwhelmed with memories of South Ockendon and my early life. Our place backed onto a small wood with its own lake, There was a woodyard there that doubled as the local mechanic. Used to get a tanner for taking peoples flat tyres there to be fixed. Played out all day over the gravel pits and went fishing alot, lots of gravel pits back then. I remember the Hospital, five kids, always there every week it seemed, lol. Did go back to have a look see many years later. Sadly, our whole neighbourhood had been redeveloped, No pre-fabs,no woods, gravel pits filled in etc. Now we just have the wonderful memories.
Hi Shirley, I remember you well also Mr. & Mrs. Impey from Benyon & Culverhouse. School wasn't our favourite place and you, Barbara Binden and me Pat Kirby, now Turner, were often in trouble. I remember coming to your house hidden behind the bushes, and the horse.
Hi, your name sounds very familiar. Maybe it was your mum. I lived in the prefabs. Celandine road. I remember mr. Impey at the school very well, and Mrs. Powell Jones. She was very bossy as I remember. I also remember the doctors at pear tree house. My doctor was called dr. Peterson, don't know if you remember . I was married at st. Nicholas in 1967. Such lovely memories. We didn't have much then, but such a lovely place to grow up in. So many adventures.
Hi Shirley, I remember your Mum , in fact Ive often thought of her, she used to let me ride with her, she even had a seat made for me, but unfortunately our prefab in Larkspur ave, was going to be demolished & we moved to Cullen Sq. she said that it was too far to go, it was a real shame as I loved spending time with her, my name was Diane Major.
I nearly fell off my seat when I saw your post, thanks for the memory
Hello, I remember your family, Shirley. I went to Benyon with Keith and Lesley, they were in my class. I used that pathway behind South Road where your house and yard were. I remember when there was a big fire there one night. We used to call that pathway Sid’s Alley. It used to get flooded quite often.
I lived in West Road, but my best pal when I was at Benyon was Tony Herriot who lived in Nursery Close, so I cut through Sid’s Alley to get there.
Best regards
Neil Jensen, Hitchin Herts
