The building that later became the Anchor was first erected in 1380. Evidently it was a popular place, since a song was published about it in 1918: 'There's good entertainment for man and beast/At this ancient smuggler's nest…' At that time, Benfleet's only public transport, a horse and carriage, operated from outside the pub.
