Nostalgic memories of Sidcup's local history

Share your own memories of Sidcup and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

In the late 1960's I bought an Austin Healy from Deeds of Sidcup. They were lovely people to do business with. I shipped the car back to the states and my friends were so excited to see an automobile with a right hand drive.
Does anyone remember Mad Margaret and her incredibly loyal sheepdog? Her rages in public were well known and her dog was a nervous wreck, understandably! Does anyone remember Scotty's sweetie shop, and Burrell's toy shop?
Smokey Joe! I lived off Sidcup Hill - on a quiet Sunday afternoon, you could hear him rolling down the hill with no tyres on his bike as noisy as , the police locked him up and gave a good wash in the winter I was told.
Wow, a lot of water under the bridge since I worked there. I worked there from about 1962 for about 12-14mths ,before embarking into the motor trade. Dees of Sidcup and they are no longer there also, great memories & great people. Jim, Ralph, the manager George, etc I loved preparing the seafood for display. Started to see the start of the appearance of scooters and motorbikes from the high street, ...see more
I spent many days playing in this park, jumping the River Shuttle and meeting the people from Lamorbey. Later I played football for Sidcup in the adjoining park, Marlborough
I went to Alma Road school and then onto Bexley Lane Secondary 1950 to 1959. I used to stop at the bakers for fresh bread straight out the oven on my way home to Forest Lodge, a large old house which was located at the far end of Halfway Street at the junction with South Spring Road (I think). It was a large three storey building made into flats. A Mr Driver had the bottom level with our ...see more
I was born in Farnborough hospital in June 1956. My mother is Austrailian and my father grew up in and around Bridgwater in Somerset. From the period of 1956 -1960 we lived in the top flat at 12 Manor Road (now sadly gone), the family living below us were (I think) called Russell. Mum and dad had friends called Mike and Carol. I went to the local primary school, we had to wear shortgrey trousers, dark blue ...see more
My parents opened a grocery store at the bottom of Hatherley Road in 1960. It had been a corn chandlers before run by the Jennings family. Dad redesigned the shop on "modern " lines as a mini supermarket. I have many happy memories of our time living above the shop. My brother and I would often take the grocery orders to the big houses in Hatherley Road and met many interesting people. We were there when the snow ...see more
My parents were so pleased when I won a scholarship to the Sidcup branch of the school and my father bought me the new-fangled biro (was there a propelling pencil the other end?) as a present. Mum could only afford one set of uniform and it had to be washed every other night. I can't now recall many names of my classmates but can see most of their faces in my mind's eye. I can't remember ...see more
Just looking at this photo brings a lump to my throat. We lived in Blackhorse Road just off the High Street. The shop in the photo is on the corner of Blackhorse Road. I was 15 yrs old in 1965 and the Beatles were topping the charts and Mods & Rockers were the latest thing! My Dad had a fruit & veg stall at top of Hadlow Road and my Mum did all her grocery shopping in Cave Austin. Fish from Pearce Bros, ...see more
