Alma Road And Bexley Lane Schools
A Memory of Sidcup.
What wonderful schools. Still remember the names of the teachers, whom in those days we gave respect. I realise now just how good the education was and indeed taught respect!
In my teens, over fifty years ago, I frequented Berry,s little sweet shop and cafe in New Eltham.
We were served by a lovely older lady we called Gran. Does anybody else remember Berry,s and lovely Gran?

(1955-1960) I started in 1b went up to 1a then 2b 3b 4b and 5b.
I think I could name most of the teachers and many of my classmates. I enjoyed my time there and played football for the school. However the form master of 2b would not be tolerated today. He randomly caned, slippered and "galoshed" many of us it seemed on a whim. In those days we accepted it. In fact in five years I only picked up one detention.
I cannot share your view that this school was in anyway inspiraional, I think we were there killing time until sent out to work, more like a training school for labourers.
Never the less I had great time there with some excellent form masters. Fido Carter who gave me lines before I entered a classroom on my first day, was good science master. Dick Bently for English and music, Mr Satchwell woodwork and tec drawing and dear Mr Shadwell with RI. Mr King, Bombhead Jones and Strongman Carter were brilliant with sport and PE.
These nicknames were all historic but affectionate, not derogatory in any way.
I loved school dinners so only occasionally whilst at Alma Road would I be drawn to the bakery across the road. We would buy penny loafs then down to the chippy for three penny worth of chips.
Yes a good honest school but no beacon to education.
