More about this scene
Shirehampton is situated between Bristol and Avonmouth. In 1865 the Bristol Port & Pier Railway opened its single line between Avonmouth and Hotwells with intermediate stations at Sea Mills and Shirehampton. As this was a purely local railway, no provision had been made to connect it with any other railway. Even the opening date was kept a secret until a few minutes before the departure of the first train, for fear that the train would be overloaded; the railway only had one engine.
