Shiphay Preparatory School

A Memory of Shiphay.

Does anyone remember Shiphay Preparatory School (also referred to as The Lilacs). I was a pupil there from 1958 to 1960. Have been trying to locate the school room, which was in an outbuilding in the grounds of a house called “The Lilacs”. The house was not far from the Devon Dumpling pub, and we used to walk to the Church hall to have our lunch. Packed lunch, sitting in a row of single desks, in total silence.
Have been trying to locate the whereabouts of the Lilacs.
Any help, or shared memories, will be much appreciated.

hi, i am researching Shiphay and the Kitson family. The Lilacs is now a private residence named Shiphay cottage in Cadewell Avenue. Before it was a school it was Wheddon Farm.
hope this helps.

Thank you very much Lee. I walked all around the old part of Shiphay recently trying to locate the house. Our classroom was in a wooden hut type building in the grounds of the house. We actually had a stove to heat the building. One time one of the boys put his foot through the floor, the floor boards were do rotten.
Shiphay was just a small village back in the 1950s. I lived on Summerfield Road and walked to school along some country lanes and footpaths. Will be very interested to see the results of your research.
