Before the dawn of the railway era, Woodford Halse was a sleepy community untouched by time.
Woodford Halse grew from a small ironstone village in the later 19th century, partly through ironstone working but mostly when the Great Central Railway arrived in 1899.
These flats beyond the ponds at Woodford Bridge were built in about 1959, and changed this remoter part of the parish from being what was generally described as a village into the general conurbation
Woodford, Waltham Abbey and West Ham were all disappointed.
Woodford Halse Post Office has moved to the electricity shop, while Cundy's, the former post office, is now an empty shop (2002).
Woodford Green was well developed when this photograph was taken.
