Local tradition alleges that Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote his famous poem 'Crossing the Bar' with the perilous entrance to the Salcombe estuary in mind. He certainly visited the town, though it has to be said that several other ports claim the honour of possessing the sand bar in question.

Salcombe of the past.
Between 1060 and 1962 I worked with Les Stone, hiring his boats off White Strand. I think Les could be in the bottom corner of the photo with the hat on. I could be the young lad near the water's edge. What memories. Great two years for me.
