More about this scene
The Barclays Bank building was designed in an Elizabethan style by William Eden Nesfield in 1874 - at the time it was the Gibson and Son bank. The high windows on the ground floor light the entrance hall, which has a carved wooden frieze depicting crocuses of several kinds. The storks in the spandrels of the doorway arch are often found on Gibson buildings. In the late 19th century the bank of the Gibsons amalgamated with others to form Barclays.
