Sacriston Seen Through The Eyes Of My Grandfather.
A Memory of Sacriston.
Hi, my grandfather, Hans Major Embleton, was born in Sacriston 1895. He grew up with his brothers and sisters, 10 in total in Victoria Street. He went down the mine at 14yrs, a mine putter, he then signed up for the Durham Light Infantry June 1913, trained and went to war in France. He survived, taken prisoner of war near the end. He returned and went back in the mine, Sacriston colliery, got married 1920. He then had my mum, Jane Ann 1921 and David 1923, they lived in Coxons Row. My grandmother died 1926, so grandad brought up my mum and David on his own till mum married in 1943. He came to live with us in the 1960s and told me about growing up, the mines, the war and Sacriston and lived with us till his death 1973. I always wanted to go to Sacriston and see where my grandparents came from. On visiting same, found most of the houses gone, but it was still a charming village and I can picture it as a mining village as I myself have been a mechanical engineer in mining in Yorkshire for 40 years. If any one knew the Embletons it would be nice to see a comment and memories of Sacriston. Mr Derick Smith.
