More about this scene
In the 1930s South Street was dubbed 'The Golden Mile' and retailers fortunate enough to acquire sites knew that they would prosper from the tidal wave of consumerism engulfing the town. South Street was more profitable per foot than London's Oxford Street. By the 1960s the needs of a new generation of consumers had to be met.
