Cheesden Brook passes under Ashworth Road, flowing to the right to join Naden Brook as it leaves Carr, Gelder and Bamford Woods. The brooks then powered a fulling mill, which Barker Bros extended for bleaching, dyeing and finishing. Wagons, with three carthorses each, took the finished cloth to Manchester warehouses, the first leaving at 6am and the last returning at 11pm every working day. James R Crompton Ltd, a specialist papermaking firm, bought the mill in around 1945 and they are still in business today. On the other side of Bury Road the brook powered another mill before joining the Roach.

Catley Lanehead
I was born in Catley Lanehead in 1955 and lived in the back of the shop at the top of Smallshaw Road with my mum and dad. My nan Agnes lived across the road from the Chapel further down and not long after we moved a few doors down from her next to The Black Dog pub. i was born in ings ave spotland in 46,all my side of the family were italian immigrants the came over late 1800s and lived on what was locally known as the mount ie rope st.my dad and grandad worked as a street organ player and ice cream vendor in the summer months and in winter sold hot spuds n chestnuts on lord st in the winter.unfortunatly all my family apart from dad had passed away through tb etc before i was born i would ...see more

Back Than
Hi there born 16/02/1951 lived at 7 Barton street back to back no longer (there). Had gas lighting and electric lighting and a gas lamp outside my bedroom. Townhead cotton mill was at the bottom of our street and knocker upper use tap the windows to wake the mill workers for 6 Am shift. Did not have a TV until 1960 a Rediffusion 19" wired. Mildred Morris's Memories Of Cronkeyshaw School
When I started at Cronkeyshaw School I went straight into the second class as I had missed out on the baby class. In those days some children attended from the age of 3 years and the little ones went to sleep on mats in the afternoon for a short period. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
