Sharpham Point and nearby Bass Rock were important fishing spots - Stoke Gabriel, on the opposite shore, had twenty salmon boats working at the end of the 19th century. Another catch were 'flukes', a type of flatfish caught by hand in the mud, and there was also a rich cockle bed.
