More about this scene
The Grand Union was created in the 1920s from a network of independent canals linking London with the industrial towns of the West and East Midlands. The Main Line runs for 137 miles and incorporates 166 locks. At Batchworth, close to Rickmansworth ('Ricky' to the bargemen), there is a fine example of a wide-beamed bascule bridge (a bascule bridge has one or more sections that rise when a counterpoise sinks).
