High Street Aka Coombe Lane

A Memory of Raynes Park.

This is Coombe Lane looking towards Raynes Park station, just visible on the righthand edge of the photo. We lived over the butcher's shop in the mid 1950's so its probable we were in residence when it was taken. The butcher outside could be a Mr Sparks as I recall. My Dad managed a butcher's shop in Earlsfield at that time. The Lucas's lived over the Bank (Mr Lucas was a bank employee (manager?) elsewhere) and Jack Warnell lived with his mother over the the green grocer. Mr Crouch ran (owned?) Reynolds estate agents in the centre of the picture and just beyond the very impressive bank building (Barclays?) was the Raynes Park Tavern. Trolly buses plied between Wimbledon and Kingston along the road (routes 604 and 605).

I remember this very well. I lived in Merton Park but had friends in Pepys Road and used to visit the cinema there (the Rialto?). In the late 50s and early 60s I used to play rugby close by in Taunton Avenue. Very happy days...

I lived in Coombe Lane over Martells Jewellers which my parents and grandparents owned. We were next door to a grocers, Mr Smith I believe? one side, and the bank the other side. We were very close to The Rialto cinema, so regularly went there to watch the latest film. Happy memories! Any photos of Martells anyone?
