Preston, Docks c.1955

More about this scene
Although they are referred to as docks, there was really only one dock, the Albert Edward Dock. It was named in honour of Queen Victoria's second son, who opened the dock when he was the Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of our picture, vessels of up to 51,000 tons could use the dock, and there was a 21ft draught. Petroleum products were among the imports, as were bananas. The ship in the centre is the 'Canford', registered in London, with a Bremen ship in the right-hand corner.
