The harbour was completed in 1858, with the flood gate (visible in the centre) raised for the first time on 7 October. The gate was intended to stop storm surges wrecking the fleet, but it was also used to allow flushing of tin waste from the Great Wheal Vor Mine which would otherwise have silted up the harbour.
