Saturday Dances
A Memory of Poole.
I only found this site today. With Covid, I believe we are all dreaming and thinking of things that we never would have thought about before. I woke up this morning and thought about the Saturday night dances held at Parkstone Grammar school (girls) as it was in the early 1950s. I think they were run by the GTC and they were very orderly. We entered via the main entrance and left our coats in an upstairs classroom and there was no liquor or anything and it was all very orderly in those days. There was a band and we did waltz, quickstep, foxtrot and even tango. We all knew the steps-(boys and girls.) We could not have cared what we wore in those days but I did have silver dancing shoes. We had to walk home in the dark and I lived in Pound Lane and used to walk home through the "common" with my boyfriend at the time. It was quite a walk. I went to Oakdale school and Talbot Heath (on scholarship)
I have loads of memories and remember those days with nostalgia. I have lived in New York on Long Island for many years but have always been 'home' regularly and sold my old home in Pound Lane last year. I could write a book by now how it all was!
