More about this scene
Lancashire landowners since the 15th century, the family achieved prominence in 1589 when Richard Shuttleworth, a successful London lawyer, was knighted and appointed Chief Justice of Chester. His brother Lawrence, a Warwickshire rector, inherited the estate, building Gawthorpe Hall in about 1600. It was subsequently remodelled by Charles Barry, architect of the Palace of Westminster, in the 1840s.
